The
Kingdom of Landreth is a micronation state which is somewhat unique in
that it does not possess any land. A similar micronation state is the
Holy
Empire of Reunion. With the advent of the internet it is
expected that there are hundreds
of ephemeral, virtual microstates in existence.
Possessing similar characteristics but with substantial history is
the very old micronation state of the Sovereign
Military Order of Malta(SMOM). It does, however, possess a tiny piece of
territory in the Palazzo Malta in Rome.
The Holy
Empire of Reunion has not issued currency units but both
Landreth and SMOM have issued monetary units. Landreth issued its paper dollars
in 1999 and the SMOM in
recent years has issued silver and gold medallic coins and proof sets
starting in 1961. SMOM began issuing coins as early as 1743.
While the SMOM is the successor state to the crusading Knights
Hospitallers founded in 1099, not much is known about the currency of
Landreth.
The Landreth banknote designs are very handsome combining a traditional face and a
modern back, both having a professionally designed appearance. Seven denominations
are known with a Series 1999, A and B designations. While these are
attractive designs, the paper used is standard bond paper which does not
do justice to these interesting notes.
Another micronation which has a proposed banknote that used Landreth as
its design inspiration is
Zugesbucht. |
