* This note is a
forgery. The following comments about this note have been provided by Joseph E. Boling, co-author of "World War II Remembered" published by BNR Press, Honorary Director for Life of the International Bank Note Society (IBNS), Treasurer and Archivist of IBNS: "I have seen blue 'Mihon' markings before (though not on the Sandaang Piso note). But the presence of the beige letters B and S on the back of this note shows that it is a modern replica. Those are intended to represent the watermark, which should be a white S and a black B repeating throughout the paper. This piece is one of many that have been sold to collectors in the west represented as being proof notes from a printer competing for the contract to print these notes, in Japan. For starters, I am
confident that the genuine notes were not printed in Japan, but at the
Kolff printing works in Djakarta. By the time these notes were needed,
Japan's printing capability was sorely taxed, and no notes were coming
from the homeland to SE Asia. Second, no competition was being conducted
for printing contracts. Third, if a proof note were to be created for
any reason, either genuine paper would be used, or special proof paper
would be used, and the watermark would not be faked on it." |
